As we enter the New Year, many of us resolve to improve our overall health and wellbeing. But how do you make sure these resolutions stick? If you’re a chronic disease patient, making long-term health changes can seem daunting. The good news is there are easy ways to get started! Here are five tips for improving your overall health in 2023.
1. Get Moving
Exercise doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. Start with something small, such as taking a 10-minute walk around the block every day. Or try stretching for five minutes before bed or after waking up in the morning. As you begin to feel stronger and more confident, gradually increase your exercise routine by adding new activities such as swimming, jogging, cycling, or yoga.
2. Eat Healthy
Eating healthy doesn’t mean you have to give up all of your favourite foods. Start by adding some fruits and vegetables into your diet each day and cutting back on processed foods. Aim for at least three servings of vegetables and two servings of fruit every day. Take small steps towards a healthier diet by replacing sugary drinks with water and snacking on nuts or seeds instead of chips or candy bars.
3. Reduce Stress
Chronic stress can lead to physical and mental exhaustion as well as an increased risk for developing certain diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and depression. Find ways to reduce stress in your life such as spending time outdoors, meditating, reading a book, listening to music, practicing deep breathing exercises, journaling your thoughts and feelings, or taking a hot bath with Epsom salts or essential oils.
4. Get Enough Sleep
Sleep is essential for optimal physical and mental health so it’s important that you get enough restful sleep each night (7-9 hours). Establish a consistent sleep schedule by going to bed at the same time each night and rising at the same time each morning (even on weekends). Avoid caffeine late in the day which can interfere with getting quality sleep since it takes 6-8 hours for caffeine to pass through your system completely.
5. Prioritize Self-Care
Self-care is an important part of maintaining good health but it often gets overlooked because we are too busy focusing on our jobs or families or other responsibilities that take priority over ourselves. Make yourself a priority this year by carving out some “me time” each week where you can relax without any distractions from work or family demands—whether that means taking a bubble bath with candles lit around the tub or watching Netflix in bed with a glass of wine is entirely up to you!
Improving your overall health doesn’t have to be overwhelming; start small by incorporating just one of these tips into your daily routine until it becomes second nature—then add another tip until eventually all five become habits! With consistent practice over time, soon enough these changes will become part of who you are—and you’ll reap the rewards of better overall health through 2023! Happy New Year!
